Course Content - Link to Images, Files, and Websites

There are many places in your course where you might want to add links to external files and Web pages or add files directly into your course. For example, you might want to add links from a content item to a course tool, such as linking from an assigment to the Dropbox- directing students where to turn in their work or from a Threaded Discussion topic to a related content item.

To link to files directly in the course, you must first upload the files directly to File Manager.

Adding links is easy. Use the Visual Editor toolbar to add links to external files, images, and Websites. There's a simple process for adding links, and it's the same process no matter where you are in your course. The Add Link window helps you add links to external files and Web pages, and to tools and content items within your individual course.


Link to Content or Files

Step 1: On the Visual Editor toolbar, click the Link button. The add a link Add a Link window opens. If you don't see the link button on the Visual Editor toolbar, you probably can't add links to that particular element.

Step 2: Select Link to Content or Files, and click Continue.

Step 3: At this point, you can either:

  • Upload Content

    1. In the Text to display field, type the text students will click to open and view the content.

    2. Click Choose File to locate and upload the file.

    3. Select the Course Folder to upload the file to.

    4. Click Add Link

    5. Click Save Changes above the Visual Editor Toolbar.

  • Select Content from Course Folder

    1. In the Text to display field, type the text students will click to open and view the content.

    2. Select the file to link to.

    3. Click Add Link.

Insert an Image

Step 1: On the Visual Editor toolbar, click add a link or insert an image. The Add a Link window opens. If you don't see add a linkor on the Visual Editor toolbar, you probably can't add links to that particular element.

Step 2: Select Insert an Image, and click Continue.

Step 3: At this point, you can either:

  • Upload Image

    1. In the Descriptive text field, type the alternate text for the image. This text displays for students who cannot view the image.Click

    2. Browse to locate and upload the file.

    3. Select the Course Folder to upload the file to.

    4. Click Insert Image.

    5. Click Save Changes.

  • Select Image from Course Folder

    1. In the Descriptive text field, type the alternate text for the image. This text displays for students who cannot view the image.

    2. Select the file to link to.

    3. Click Insert Image.

    4. Click Save Changes.


Link to a Website

Step 1: On the Visual Editor toolbar, click add a link. The Add a Link window opens. If you don't see add a link on the Visual Editor toolbar, you probably can't add links to that particular element.

Step 2: Select Link to Website, and click Continue.

Step 3: In the fields provided, enter information accordingly:

• Text to display - Type the text students will click on to open the Website.
• Website address - Type the address to the Website. To avoid typos, copy and paste the address into the field.

Step 4: Click Add Link.

Step 5: Click Save Changes.


Link to a Course Tool

Step 1: On the Visual Editor toolbar, click add a link. If you don't see add a link on the Visual Editor toolbar, you probably can't add links to that particular element.

Step 2: Select Link to a Course Tool, and click Continue.

Step 3: In the fields provided, enter information accordingly:

• Text to display - Type the text students will click to open the selected course tool.
• Tool to link to - Select the course tool you want to link to.

Step 4: Click Add Link.

Step 5: Click Save Changes.


Link to Course Content

Step 1: On the Visual Editor toolbar, click add a link. If you don't see add a link on the Visual Editor toolbar, you probably can't add links to that particular element.

Step 2: Select Link to Course Content, and click Continue.

Step 3: In the fields provided, enter information accordingly:

• Text to display - Type the text students will click to open the selected content item.
• Content to link to - In the drop-down list, select the section in the course containing the content you want to link to, and then select the content item.

Step 4: Click Add Link.

Step 5: Click Save Changes.
